After reuniting with Dr. Luke for last year’s universally panned 143, Katy Perry has ditched the super-producer for her new single, “Bandaids.” Co-written and co-produced by Perry and Justin Tranter, who co-wrote Chappell Roan’s smash hit “Good Luck, Babe!,” the track sees the singer returning to a more conventional pop sound following the EDM of her previous album.
“Bandaids” finds Perry, who recently separated from fiancé Orlando Bloom, metaphorically bruised and battered, having “tried all the medications” for her broken heart. Amid metallic, shimmery guitars and a shuffling pop-rock beat, the song reaches a semi-anthemic climax in which Perry keeps her expectations low: “Got so used to you letting me down/No use tryna send flowers now.”
Co-directed by Perry and Christian Breslauer, the music video for “Bandaids” pays homage to the Final Destination series, recreating iconic scenes like the log truck pileup from the second film. Like the characters in the series, Perry initially manages to emerge only slightly scathed…that is, until the clip’s explosive finale.
