Just five days into Dry January, Bruno Mars was the first to break the music industry’s usual post-holidays thirst strike when he took to social media to announce the completion of The Romantic, his first solo album since 2016’s Grammy-winning 24K Magic. And in very short order, the album’s lead single, “I Just Might,” has arrived.
The midtempo “I Just Might” finds Mars squarely within his wheelhouse, throwing it back with some old-school soul punctuated by bright guitar licks, a buzzy bassline, and lots of brass. “What good is beauty if the booty can’t find the beat?” he asks, making it clear that being able to bust a move is a prerequisite to being his woman.
The music video for “I Just Might” sees Mars simultaneously taking on the roles of singer, guitarist, bassist, drummer, and percussionist on a studio set retrofitted with some very ’70s-era wood paneling and recessed lighting. The clip was co-directed by Mars and Daniel Ramos.
